I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a doozy for business. Between COVID, the global pandemic, and the shutdown, and now the effect of the election, businesses have taken a huge hit. It has certainly not been the year we all thought it would be. Coming out of 2019 we had some goals for increasing our business. I’ve stated in the past that I think all businesses should have at least a few goals they want to accomplish each year and this year was one where we were shooting for the stars.
One of the goals we have had for the last couple of years is to win an Eagle Award. Well, if you are seeing this video it is because the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce has seen fit to award us with one. For those of you who are not familiar with the Eagle Award, it is the Chamber’s annual program designed to recognize minority-owned companies’ successes.
Blue Fish was founded in 2008. This overnight success has been anything but overnight. But I would not change it at all. In 2008 my goal was just to learn something new and push myself into something I thought was interesting. It functioned as a place for me to do business as a freelancer for almost a decade. I was spending a lot of time focused on raising my boys and in 2016 I decided they were all in school and able to look after themselves so it was ok for me to focus on growing the business. I decided to push on the gas and see what Blue Fish could become. In that time we have won numerous awards for the work that we have done for clients, and the work we have done to make Mobile a better place. One other award of note, we won the Chamber’s Small Business of the Year in 2018. That will be one that I never forget, and the Eagle Award is another that will go right beside it.
This award means so much, but I could not have done any of this without my team. I would like to take just a moment to thank Tad, who I call Employee #1, and Jared, who has quickly become my right hand. They are the ones that enable me to function in the areas I function best, but they are also the ones that reel me back in. Any entrepreneur can tell you we are dreamers, we are visionaries, we see problems and we want to find solutions and provide value. It isn’t so much about the money, although you need it to stay in business, it is a game to us. A game where the opponent is ourselves. Tad and Jared keep me grounded and I am forever grateful to them.
I also want to thank the rest of the team for joining me on this journey. A lot is demanded of you. But we try and have fun and make awesome stuff while doing all the things.
I would also like to thank the Chamber. I am a raving fan of the Chamber and intentionally invest my time there because it pays off for us in business. The networking leads to connections, the connections lead to friendships, and the friendships often lead to work. Thank you for continuing to believe in what we have done and will continue to do for our community. We do not take our position in Mobile lightly.
So bringing this back to something helpful to you. Businesses should celebrate their wins. A business’ celebration positions them as a winner and attracts more success. As you look to grow your business, celebratory events not only reinforce the positive aspects of what you are doing but, positions your business correctly as a desirable company with which others would like to associate.
So take an hour to just think over the last year. What were some of the things you accomplished? What were some of the things your business accomplished? Were there new skills that you learned? Revenue goals that were met? Did you win a big client that you have always wanted to work with?
All in all, celebrate your wins. This will build momentum and do tremendous things for you.
