This week we are going to talk about a little secret most people don’t know.

What’s up Fish Fans! My name is Marcus. You’re watching Marketing Madness, the Blue Fish vlog!

So I want to talk to you today about a little secret that most people don’t know about business. Are you ready? Here it is… There is no certainty in business. There is no 100%. So often I run across people that want to grow their business but they are paralyzed by indecision. Business is more like science than math. Here’s what I mean by that…

When you are trying to prove something in science you come up with a hypothesis. Websters defines a hypothesis as a proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.

If we look at something from the business world we can easily see that this applies. Take product selection for instance. I am good friends with the owners of a women’s boutique clothing store. Maya is absolutely amazing at getting the right clothes into her store for the demographic she serves. The color could be wrong. The sizes she orders could be slightly off. The fit could be a bit different than what is needed. Even as amazing as she is, she cannot be 100% certain that she is going to buy all of the right things when ordering products for her stores.

The same goes for advertising. You cannot be 100% certain that when you place ads that they will resonate with your audience. It could be the copy. The imagery. The timing. The offer. It could be a myriad of things.

So what are you to do? First, rely on experience. Maya has a lot of experience in buying clothing for stores so she is going to hit a lot more home runs than I would. Blue Fish has a lot more experience creating and placing ads than most business owners so we will get further faster than most.

But give yourself freedom. In science you experiment. You try different things. You hold all of the parameters the same except one and you tweak that one to see what the impact is. Advertising is the same. Place an ad. Hold all things the same but change the offer. Next chance the imagery. Maybe the headline isn’t grabbing their attention. The results will often show you what you need to adjust. You just have to know what to look for. But the key is to give yourself some leeway to try different things and see what the results are.
